Research: The Baby Monitor

I watched a Psychological Thriller called The Baby Monitor by RPI EMAC students, Frank and Zach Appio, which I watched for some further inspiration for the different types of Thrillers I can make for my short film. 

Overall, I found the film extremely effective and scary which is what my idea of what a Thriller should be like. This is firstly shown through the tensing music which quickens in pace before a big occurrence or a climax in the plot. The film also has very effective filters which makes it more creepy and scary to watch. The short film is also very clever as it makes us feel sympathetic towards the main female character when she hears creepy sounds coming from the closet in the baby's bedroom, when really we should not as at the end we find out that she has imprisoned someone in the closet and supposedly plans to take her place.

From watching this short film, I have learned about the different types of Thriller and has given me more ideas and inspiration for my own short film and also what types of effects and filters I can use for my short film.

Audience Feedback

Yesterday afternoon I showed my short film to a small focus group and asked them to fill in feedback forms with ratings out of five and comments. Here is an overview of all the marks I got for my feedback. One of the main criticisms of my Short Film was that the music was too repetitive. After receiving this feedback I went back to my short film and listened closely to the music. However, I have decided to keep the music as it does reflect the repetitiveness of my characters life and does effectively contrast to the atmosphere of the short film as a whole. Also, most audience members also said how the little amount of colour grading was effective as it made it more realistic and reflected the mood of the short film. They said that lots of colour grading would have ruined the message of the short film as a whole. Knole House Trip

On Friday the 30th of June 2017, we went to visit Knole House in Kent. Knole house is the home of Vita Sackville-west and the house where Virginia Woolf visited. We had a guided tour of the house, however, it took us a while to realise that the whole tour was a performance and was telling us about views on gender equality as well as telling the story of Orlando, based of Virginia Woolf's novel. The tour was based on a scientific investigation, where the forensic scientists were trying to de-contaminate the site in order to find out clues into Orlando's disappearance and also. work out the space-time continuum. On the tour we met, Greek Gods, Shakespearean actors, Georgian scientists, Vita Sackville-west and eventually Virginia Woolf herself.
