Short Film research

I looked at some short films of shortoftheweek.com for inspiration for my short films and also to see how other drama/thriller films are set out and what storylines they use.

THRILLER

Inside
I watched a short thriller film called "Inside" by Trevor Sands which was about a doctor trying to resolve the conflicting voices inside a mind of a patient with multiple personality disorder. I thought the story was set out really clearly and cleverly as it represented the multiple personalities of the character as human beings which the audience can see.

I also liked the blue filter over the top of the shots which gave the film a dark setting and feel to it, which reflected the feelings of the character. Furthermore, I liked the shadows they used in order to introduce all of the different personalities of the character's to the audience, which proved to be very effective for the storyline of the film.

Overall, I liked the ideas used in the film and especially enjoyed the voiceover used in the beginning which made the audience connect to the character and make them feel sorry for the character and his condition.

Picnic

I watched another thriller short film called "Picnic" by Gerardo Herrero which was about a family who go on a picnic to a wood of the wife's childhood, however, it turns into a life or death situation as there is now a war occurring. Towards the start of the film, there is high-key lighting and a yellow filter, which reflects the calm and happy mood of the scene. However, as the audience you can tell the there is a certain eeriness of the place as the camera pans over warning signs of land mines, which the characters are oblivious to.

Furthermore, as the situation in the film worsens, there is more fast-pace editing to show the chaos of the scene. Also, the filter changes to a blue filter and low-key lighting which reflects the change in mood and how the films events have darkened and causes anguish to the main character. Overall, the film is set out very clearly and effectively and has the audiences on the edge of their seats.

DRAMA

The Sound of Your Voice

I also watched a Drama short film, called "The Sound of Your Voice" by Hunt Beaty which was about  a voice-over artist who is haunted by her past love. The film consists of the woman recording screaming for  a film. However, this screaming is mixed in with various angry voice and text messages from her ex-boyfriend. The music and the facial expressions of the actress as well as the sounds from the film create tension and a sense of danger. The woman is on screen for the majority of the film focussing the audiences attention onto her and to make them sympathise with her situation.

Furthermore, the screams from the film that is playing which she is meant to be mimicking increasing the drama and the tension of the film as a whole. The camera performs various close ups on the woman eyes and face signifying her sense of fear as she ignores the countless of voicemails, calls and text messages from her ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend seems to be presented as the antagonist and the audience are immediately drawn to dislike him because of the way he treats the woman through his calls. Lastly, the last shot of the film leaves the audience on a cliffhanger as the woman lies on the floor of the recording studio with a look of fear on her face. Even though the ending is unclear it is effective as it again enhances the tension and mystery of the short film as a whole.
